Creative Destruction – Art Sheffield & Psychogeography

Creative Destruction

Geography Events

I will be attending two one day events this month. The first is the ‘Inequality and the Human Geography of Sheffield’ conference featuring alternative mapper Danny Dorling and old college lecturer Carl Lee (21st September 1-4pm @ the Dainton Building). The second is the CRESR PhD showcase – which will be a chance for me to see my peers and their research (23rd September 2-5pm @ 9131 Furnival building SHU).

The HeebieJeebies

For a few months now I have been waxing lyrical about Sheffield trio The HeebieJeebies. A friendly approachable bunch the conversations have ranged from Baudelaire, obscure South African instrumentation, and the slow death of Psalter Lane Art School. Sometimes normally clothed, sometimes face painted, sometimes dressed as neo-Dada masked spaceman!

Anyway, I was asked to write a few words about their amazing band which can be found here:

I’ve not blogged for such a long time it’s so hard to keep it up to speed with everything. I’ve not got a girlfriend but at least I’ve got a blog. I don’t know how to drive but at least I’ve got a blog.

I am a busy bee at the minute. I’m working voluntarily for the Geographical Association helping them with a variety of interesting things. I can’t tell you much more than that because it’s all top secret stuff.

I’ve attended my first festival since securing the studentship. I went to the Dot to Dot festival 2009 in Nottingham which was an excellent one day event.

I managed to see (in no particular order):

Vivian Girls, Abe Vigoda, The Pains of Being at Heart (thanks to the keyboardist Peggy for the free lager – nice touch), Crystal Stilts, Girls, Duchess Says, The XX, Tommy Reilly, Wave Machines, Shapeshifter, Brodinski (DJ set), Annie Mac and Boys Noize (I think).

A video from the Crystal Stilts set:

Crystal Stilts – Sugar Baby

I managed to miss (again in no particular order):

Patrick Wolf, Little Boots, Marina and the Diamonds, Wave Machines, Baddies, AC Newman, Son of Dave, Polly Scattergood, Crystal Antlers, Naive New Beaters, Titus Andronicus, Gay Blades et al.

It’s a great festival – so many venues to choose from – in fact you were never in the same place twice. We drank plenty and managed to fit four people in a three bed hotel – we didn’t trash it or anything like that! We liked the Bodega Social Club most – it was so small and could see the whites of the performers eyes!  Abe Vigoda were amazing – they got everyone crowd surfing. We stood at the back by this point although I think I was in the mixer for a bit. We all loved the Vivian Girls new stuff.

The XX impressed us greatly too.

I’m looking forward to Tramlines festival in Sheffield at the end of July – where the XX are playing.

I need a full line up of the festival – but as I’m not on facebook its hard for me to find one. I’ve twittered them anyways.

Nothing much else to report apart from some more blog update internet things!

I’ve learned how to to tweet: tmaxwellshore
